Some people are so talented that they change the world and made it turn upside down. I am so glad to share with you a fantastic story of rolling bridge by Thomas Heatherwick. This unusual creation is a part of the Grand Union Canal at Paddington Basin, London. The following bridge consists of eight special sections. They are connected to each other with the help of hydraulic pistons.

The bridge is a perfect solution of creating an elegant, nice and really useful construction when you are lack of space. The bridge has many unusual positions. For example, most people claim it looks amazing and so funny both while completely curled up and while in a vertical position. The concept of building is very interesting - the almost-40-foot-long remote-controlled hydraulic bridge was designed to be transformable, easy to use and not noticeable at the first sight.

It was the deliberate decision to make the bridge very ordinary and simple. And the contrast is so unbelievable: the bridge is graceful and so damn quick. Frankly speaking, the bridge was designed to allow people to reach the far side and to allow boats to get into an inlet.

As a rule, the bridge is curled every Friday at noon.

After having written a post about skyscrapers I made my find to find more about them and to determine the tallest buildings n the world. So, after some efforts and searches I am ready to present you a list of the most accurate compilation of the tallest building in the world.

Taipei 101

Location: Taiwan (Taipei city)

Height: 509 m (1,671 ft)

Floors: 101

Date: 2004

Interesting facts: as far as you have already understood, it is the tallest building in the world and it holds this record since 2004. This building has the tallest roof, the outdoor observation deck is the highest in the world and highest occupied floor as well. It managed to break the half-kilometer mark in height. The design was inspired by traditional Chinese architecture, so it has a strong resemblance to a typical pagoda, its project was approved by a Feng Shui master and the whole construction is based on the number 8. By the way, it possesses the quickest lifts in the world, cost for each exceeds $US 2 million.

2. Shanghai World Financial Center

Location: China (city Shanghai)

Height: 492 m (1,614 ft)

Floors: 101

Date: 2008

This great building possesses 2 sightseeing bridges and is made from glass and metal, thus, creating mysterious sight effects. Because of insufficient investments it was erecting for a long time. Its height has changed from the original plan from 460m to 492m and design as well, due to extra investments and desire to make this structure safer that it was planned. There is a 6-star hotel located near the top of the building. What I like the most about this building it is rumours that it will be the tallest one and will surpass Taipei 101. Approximately $850 million of dollars were invested in it.

3. Petronas Twin Towers

Location: Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur)

Height: 452 m (1,483 ft)

Floors: 88

Date: 1998

These towers were named the tallest in the world in 1997 and they were in the head of it till October 2003. There is a sky bridge between the 2 towers at the level of 41st and 42nd floors, it weighs 750 tons. In general, both towers possess 32.000 windows and their erecting cost $ 1,2 billion. Main aim of their building was to irradiate power and strength and to emphasize the principles of Islamic architecture. These towers include: an art gallery, a parking lot (no doubts, underground), the national oil-company, a concert hall.

4. Sears Tower

Location: USA (Chicago, Illinois)

Height: 442 m (1,451 ft)

Floors: 108

Date: 1974

First of all, due to 2 antennae on the roof, this skyscraper possesses the status of the highest “tip height” skyscraper in the world. For many years people were thinking of this building to be of 1,454 feet height, but, actually, it was a misprint. It was designed by Skidmore, it took 3 years to construct it and sometimes approximately 1, 600 people worked there. There is a cool moving sculpture “The Universe” right in the middle of the lobby. Elevators belong to one of the most quickest in the world. The tower has an observatory at the 103 stories level, more than 1,5 million of people visit it each year. All this pleasure cost over $150,000,000.

5. Jin Mao Tower

Location: China (Shanghai)

Height: 421 m (1,380 ft)

Floors: 88

Date: 1999

Bregman + Hamann Architects took part in its designing. It boasts a great observatory on the 88th floor and it is the largest observation deck in China. As to the styles, it is a typical Chinese one with the tiered pagoda. The building is made in such a way to withstand earthquakes (till 6 on the Richter) and typhoons. It has the world’s highest hotel rooms.

There are so many bridges in the world, most of them even don’t worth our attention, but, also, there are some bridges, that keep you on tenterhooks either looking at them or driving. So, 5 top strangest bridges in the world:

Bridges Glanerbeek are the 1st bridges in our list. There were three main transportation arteries in this area: for pedestrians, bikes and buses. The aim was to divide these three areas while making amazing bridges. The entire construction is based on a thin, but reliable deck. The bridges look very harmonically and so close to nature.

Borneo Sporenburg Bridges. These bridges are located in Amsterdam and were made by Naomi. Three unusual red steel bridges extend over the water between the islands Sporenburg and Borneo. Two of these three bridges stretch for 90m and the 3d one is 25 meters long. The pedestrian bridge is the most unusual one.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge. It is the 1st in the world tilting bridge, it spans across the River Tyne, and unites Gateshead Quays and the center of Newcastle. This bridge is made up of a two steel arches: thus, the bridge looks like a completely rigid structure. Because of incredible curves and the simplicity of the idea, this bridge is very elegant. Also, it is environmentally friendly. The Millennium Bridges is really stunning while illuminated, it draws attention of many people.

Zouthavenbrug. You can find it in Amsterdam. This bridge is situated in a strange and not very usual place as for a bridge but it appeared to be a very reliable one. It supports weigh almost 200 tons. It looks like a spinal column, possessing 21 trusses. This bridge is a bright detail of Amsterdam.

Nescio Bridge and again in Amsterdam. This bridge is the longest in the Netherlands. The bridge is a result of close collaboration between architects and engineers. It possesses slender form, and has a span of 170 m. The bridge is environmentally-friendly and it is the 1st suspension bridge in the Netherlands.
